“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign.
Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear
a son, and shall name him Emmanuel.”
The weekly themes during Advent are Hope, Peace, Love and Joy. We know that in a world that is often filled with difficulty and despair, we need to be intentional at looking for hope, peace, love and joy and intentional about sharing those gifts with others. When we are paying attention, ordinary life offers wonderful signs of hope, peace, love and joy all around us.
We are in the third week of Advent, which is the week of Love. I saw a wonderful reminder of love when I was out running Saturday morning. The sidewalks were slightly damp from some overnight precipitation, so I was being cautious and looking down more at the sidewalk in case there was ice. Then on one square of sidewalk, a sign of love appeared…it was a small dry spot on the sidewalk almost perfectly shaped like a heart!
Then during Children’s Time in worship yesterday, Amanda shared her favorite ‘Christmas’ song with the children and we all sang the chorus. The song is “All You Need Is Love,” by the Beatles from back in the 1960s. Another sign of love came as the congregation sang the five simple words of the chorus and the song title, “All you need is love. All you need is love. All you need is love, love; love is all you need.”
In this growing Advent season and this week of Love, may we pay attention to the signs that will continue to point us to the coming of Emmanuel as God with us.
