Sharing in the Hope
Jesus said, “Yet I am not alone because God is with me. I have said this to you, so that in me you may have peace. In the world you face persecution. But take courage; I have conquered the world!”
In some of his Holy Week writings, the late priest and theologian Henry Nouwen said that when we have hope, we do not as easily get tangled up with the darkness and despair that can so often hold us down in life.
Nouwen wrote that at first God was the God for us. Then, when Jesus came, God was Emmanuel, the God with us. Finally, with the coming of the Holy Spirit, God was revealed to us as the God within us…our very breath and heartbeat and hope.
Life is full of brokenness and disappointment, yet with God’s Spirit within us we know that we have hope. As we move through this Holy Week, and hear and feel the stories of each day, may we see that the only way not to become bitter and resentful in times of brokenness, despair and disappointment is to share in the hope and peace and promise of God’s faithful presence in our lives.
Blessings in this Holy Week.
