Gifts of Love Return
“Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together,
running over, will be put into your lap; for the measure you give will be the measure you get back.”
If you have ever thrown a boomerang, you know that it is an L-shaped device designed to return to the one who throws it. Boomerangs are thought to have originated as a hunting tool in Australia thousands of years ago. Modern boomerangs are used more for play, sport and entertainment.
When we think about the intent of a boomerang as something that comes back to us, the same idea is also expressed in the giving of our time, talents and resources. God’s promise in Scripture reminds us that when we give generously, we can expect to receive generously. When our giving is grounded in that promise, we should expect God’s blessings to come back in our direction and we should be ready to watch for and receive those blessings like a boomerang.
Sometimes we miss the blessings of God because we are not paying attention or not expecting them to return to us in some way. We walk through life discouraged instead of expectant and hopeful. Yet, Jesus offers hope by saying that we will not just receive the same ‘measure’ as what we give, but that the measure we receive back will be ‘running over’ with goodness, though not always in the way we might expect. Sometimes the best things that come back to us from our giving are gratitude, love, healing, affirmation, forgiveness, friendship and grace.
In this week, may we notice how the gifts we give return to us like a blessing boomerang of God’s grace.
