“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
Mark Twain is often credited with the saying, “The only person who likes change is a wet baby.”
Mark Twain knew a lot about human nature and how so often we cling to the status-quo and resist change. Yet, we know that life is changing all the time…changing in our own lives, changing in the world around us and changing in the life of the church.
To help us move more gracefully through whatever change may be happening, it is good to remember what is changeless in our Christian faith. What is changeless in our Christian faith is who God is through Jesus Christ. Scripture reminds us that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, and today, and forever.” What is changeless in our Christian faith is the message and the mission. The message of God’s redeeming love for all people and the mission of going out and sharing God’s love so lives can be changed for the sake of making our communities and our world look more like God’s kingdom.
As life and the world and the church continue to change, may we hold to the changelessness of God and find ways to help make life around us look a little more like the kingdom of God.
