Sightings & Signs
“On the day I called, you answered me, you increased my strength of soul.”
This past week, as the cleanup continued following the gas explosion and fires in downtown Sun Prairie, a sighting of a brilliant red cardinal was seen sitting on the fence that had been decorated with flowers near the debris site. So much is God’s creation offers signs of God’s presence with us. It is male cardinals that have the striking red feathers and beautiful chirping sounds that can grab our attention. It is these red cardinals that are said to be spiritual messengers.
The word cardinal comes from the Latin word cardo, meaning hinge. Like a door’s hinge, the cardinal is the hinge that can offer a sign of presence between earth and God’s Spirit. Cardinals are also birds who mate for life, so they are symbols of God’s lasting and faithful presence.
Since the school mascot in Sun Prairie is the cardinal and many school events and businesses are named after the Sun Prairie Cardinals, we can probably think of many other ways a red cardinal is a wonderful sighting for our community at this time of recovery and healing.
As we continue to pray for our Sun Prairie community in the aftermath of disaster and as we put our prayers into actions of help and hospitality, may we also allow our cardinal sightings to bring us a feeling of peace. May we know that God is with us and that the cardinal can be for us a sign of the Holy Spirit’s guiding presence.
The phrase ‘Sun Prairie Strong’ has roots in the sightings and signs of our feathered friends, the cardinals!
