Penguin Love

“Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude…Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.”
–1 Corinthians 13:4, 7-8a

I had the privilege of attending the Penguin Project theatre production of School House Rock Live! Jr. on Friday evening. The Penguin Project is an amazing theatre troupe that matches children and youth, who have special needs, with peer mentors who are alongside them as gentle guides. The children and youth with special needs are known as Artists, which is a wonderful title that describes well the creative and passionate theatre art they offer.

The total number of artists and mentors was almost 100 and then with the directors, producers, crew and support help, the number of people that make the Penguin Project possible is amazing. It is a joy to watch as every Artist involved in the production contributes in significant ways using their abilities and gifts. Even those Artists in wheelchairs had their place in the show by creatively having their chairs decorated as part of the stage set and having their mentors dancing their chairs around the stage during the musical pieces.

More than five months of planning and practice went into this production and the care and love that is visible in the preparation, performance and post-performance is something that warms the heart and emotions. The joy on the faces of the Artists and entire cast after the performance was a wonderful display of the patient, kind, hopeful, enduring love that the Apostle Paul writes about in his letter to the Corinthians.

The Penguins do a majority of their practices at our church during the year and many of us have the joy of hearing their music when we are in the church building during practice times. The song to conclude the show was “Don’t Stop Believin” and is the Penguin family ‘signature song’ with which they also concluded most of their practices. The song is a wonderful reminder of the kind of love that bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, and endures all things.

May our daily lives and living witness to this kind of love in a needy world!

Blessings,
Jenny
