To Know the Love of God
“I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of God that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.”
The above verses are part of a prayer that is tucked in the middle of the book of Ephesians (Eph 3:14-21). The entire prayer has the quality of a beautiful benediction and blessing that is filled with gratitude. The prayer asks that those in the community be strengthened, rooted, and grounded in love; as well as empowered, and filled with all the fullness of God. The language of the prayer is abstract, but strong and powerful in getting across what the writer of the prayer knows about God.
The prayer can also raise questions for us to ponder, such as, when have we known the strength of God’s presence within us? How do we remain rooted and grounded in the love of God that is so amazing we cannot possibly understand it? How do we encourage others in our circles of connection and in our community to seek the love of God through faithful worship and service?
May this prayer written for others over two thousand years ago, stir within us this week, a great longing for renewal and restoration within the great, expansive love of God.
